ASTHMA, THE COMPLETE GUIDE by Prof. Jonathan Brostoff & Linda Gamlin
You might find it difficult to believe that a seriously thick, large format
paperback called 'The Complete guide' was hard to put down - but this is !
Taking what is recognised to be one of the fastest growing conditions, especially
among young children, in the western world the authors deconstruct conventional
attitudes to asthma. Their grounds, as they say in the introductory section,
are that most asthmatics could feel substantially better, need fewer drugs
and enjoy life more if they would tackle their asthma from several different
angles rather than relying solely on drugs.
Identifying and avoiding allergens and major triggers (pets, damp houses, house
dust mite, pollen etc), learning to breathe well and strengthening breathing
muscles, investigating and treating food sensitivities and chronic low level
infections, reviewing whether your home or your work environments and contributing
to your asthma, checking that the drugs that you are taking are right for you
and improving your diet - are just a few of the measures that they suggest
- and exhaustively examine - in the books' 500 odd pages. An excellent investment
for both doctor and patient.

ASTHMA EPIDEMIC by Dr John Mansfield
Dr Mansfieldinvestigates the exponential rise in asthma over the last 20 years
and challenges the conventional drug based approach to treatment.
He points out that vitamin and mineral deficiencies (especially magnesium)
are usually overlooked as background factors of potential importance. Food
allergy and intolerance are seldom considered and no attempt is made to find
a cause which could, ideally, lead to a cure. Instead the patient is prescribed
drugs and shuffled from clinic to clinic, rarely attending one which sees asthma
as part of a general allergic condition.
Nutritional advice, elimination diets and desensitisation through neutralisation
are all considered. A very worthwhile book for any asthma sufferer.
