THE JOURNEY THROUGH M E by Janet Hurrell
Janet Hurrell has suffered from ME for 18 years - ever since a mild sneezy cold after a long period of stress, developed into acute neck, head and shoulder pain, lethargy, dizziness, loss of appetite and a sore, swollen throat - and that was just for starters...
It took her 16 months to get a diagnosis by which time she was
running her life in short bursts from the sofa - and ‘feeling like a 90 year old with Alzheimer’s!’ It has taken her the remaining 161/2 years to work her way back to moderate health although - as she says, ME never goes away and is always waiting to pounce if you do not give it the respect it deserves.
During her journey Janet has, like most ME sufferers, tried everything - a disastrous early encounter with antibiotics (not touched since) and a wide range of complementary therapies - acupuncture, Bowen technique, massage, reflexology, healing, homeopathy, lymphatic drainage, cranial therapy, reverse therapy and ridding her home of geopathic stress. All, she feels, were useful to some extent although none were the total answer.
Loathe to waste the results of her lengthy researches, Janet also started to make notes which, in due course, turned into her first book - A helping hand through ME/CFS - now expanded into The Journey through ME.
Her technique is very simple. In large print and simple prose (designed for the ‘muddled brains and jazzy vision’ of ME sufferers) she works
her way through 200 topics - set out alphabetically - which may be of use to ME/CFS sufferers.
These range from adrenals/ stress, aloe vera and aspartame through butyric acid, colonic irrigation, colostrum, Essiac tea, geopathic stress, Gulf war syndrome, meditation, noni juice, parasites, ‘psychological stuff’, sex, sugar craving and thyroid to returning to work and zen chi...
Her findings are clearly noted, her advice always sensible and down to earth - and, wherever relevant, telephone numbers or websites are given. A really interesting book to read - but even more useful for
constant easy reference.
