Our very welcome Indian summer in September has been a great excuse to enjoy a few new late summer ices - the B’Nice Rice Creams which impressed us greatly when we reviewed them last month, and the Bensons new apple ice lollies.
Another welcome arrival for late summer are new Tofutti Rock ‘n’ Roll cones - this time with really crunchy cones. The samples we tried back in our ice cream tasting in May found favour for the ice cream filling - very much like a Cornetto - but were ruined by horribly soggy cones. Tofutti assured us that they were working on the problem - and they certainly seem to have got it cracked.
We tasted the new cones, which are chocolate lined, and they are delicious, crunchy - not a hint of sog... Just to refresh readers’ memories, Tofutti ices are made from soya, rapeseed oil, corn syrup, soya and cottonseed oil, tofu. However, be warned, the crunchy cones are made from wheat, sugar and vegetable fat and the chocolate coating includes palm oil, sugar, cocoa powder and pecan nuts - so they are not for wheat, gluten or nut allergics. The cones come in boxes of four, cost 74p per cone and can be found in most
multiples and health food stores.

The new kids on the ice cream block are Bensons Chilly Billies - pure apple juice (from Cox, Jonagold and Gala apples) from the Bensons apple orchards in the Cotswolds (94%) - plus raspberry juice (6%).
The Chilly Billy ice pops come in attractive pop up packs (so do not drip all down your shirt) and taste really delicious - very refreshing, not too sweet and, as they say - full of vitamin C!
The ice pops cost just over £1 each and are available at farmers’ markets, some health food stores and delis or else direct from Bensons - along with their various apple juices.

And don’t forget the other exciting new arrival this year - the
Booja-Booja Stuff in a Tub - a seriously delicious ‘ice cream’ made from cashew nuts, agave syrup and the appropriate flavouring.
Stuff in a Tub comes in Keep Smiling Vanilla M'Gorilla, Hunky Punky Chocolate, Coconut Hullabaloo, Feisty Winjin Ginger and Pompompous Maple Pecan. We tried the vanilla (delicious), the chocolate (seriously delicious) and the maple and pecan, which we felt was a little too sweet at that point. Full our full report click here.
Stuff in a Tub costs around £5 a tub from independent stores -
