Toasters don't roast chickens by Melanie Gow
This is the very interesting, although somewhat discursive, tale of Melanie Gow’s five-year battle to understand and finally ‘cure’ her two small boys’ respiratory problems.
At two Ben could scarcely breathe, had dreadful digestive problems, could not sleep, was deaf in one ear and was visibly failing to thrive. Diagnosed with asthma and heavily medicated, he only got worse; re-diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and offered different medication he improved, but only marginally.
Homeopathy, the discovery of a dairy sensitivity and neuro-linguistic programming have finally returned Ben to almost perfect health but it has been an uphill path during which Mel has learned to trust her own instincts rather than the endless doctors and specialists whose treatments only made her sons worse.
Just some of the discoveries she made on the way:
• diseases are the sign of a malfunctioning body, they do not occur in healthy bodies
• treat people, not diseases
• search for a cause before you seek a cure.
She also discovered that the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination was probably the trigger in Ben’s case; his father had a history of allergy and had had a long and difficult birth.
A very good read incorporating a great deal of useful and encouraging information for the parents of allergic and/or sick children.

Asthma, The Complete Guide by Prof. Jonathan Brostoff & Linda Gamlin
You might find it difficult to believe that a seriously thick, large format
paperback called 'The Complete Guide' was hard to put down - but this is!
Taking what is recognised to be one of the fastest growing conditions, especially
among young children, in the western world the authors deconstruct conventional
attitudes to asthma. Their grounds, as they say in the introductory section,
are that most asthmatics could feel substantially better, need fewer drugs
and enjoy life more if they would tackle their asthma from several different
angles rather than relying solely on drugs.
Identifying and avoiding allergens and major triggers (pets, damp houses, house
dust mite, pollen etc), learning to breathe well and strengthening breathing
muscles, investigating and treating food sensitivities and chronic low level
infections, reviewing whether your home or your work environments and contributing
to your asthma, checking that the drugs that you are taking are right for you
and improving your diet - are just a few of the measures that they suggest
- and exhaustively examine - in the books' 500 odd pages. An excellent investment
for both doctor and patient.

Asthma Epidemic by Dr John Mansfield
Dr Mansfield investigates the exponential rise in asthma over the last 20 years
and challenges the conventional drug based approach to treatment.
He points out that vitamin and mineral deficiencies (especially magnesium)
are usually overlooked as background factors of potential importance. Food
allergy and intolerance are seldom considered and no attempt is made to find
a cause which could, ideally, lead to a cure. Instead the patient is prescribed
drugs and shuffled from clinic to clinic, rarely attending one which sees asthma
as part of a general allergic condition.
Nutritional advice, elimination diets and desensitisation through neutralisation
are all considered. A very worthwhile book for any asthma sufferer.
