50 things you can do today to manage migraines by Wendy Green
Author Wendy Green has herself been a migraine sufferer, so many of these suggestions are tried and tested. The idea is that each preventative measure will not have the same outcome for everyone, and that a bit of legwork must be done by individuals in order to find the best personal method to manage one’s own migraine attacks.
This pocket-sized book contains a wide variety of alternative and conventional approaches to the management of migraines: the opening chapter describes what migraines are, their symptoms and how to identify the triggers. This is followed by fifty detailed tips on actions to take, and things to avoid, to prevent migraines occurring. These range from noting what foods you eat around the time you get a migraine to what medication you are taking; how to manage your time if stress is a cause of your migraines; yoga, breathing and exercises to release tension; different herbs, diets and medication to try.
The last couple of chapters contain a glossary of unfamiliar terms, a list of useful books and relevant organisations from which to seek advice, as well as a chapter of useful products that may help with the frequency or severity of attacks, or with the symptoms that can accompany attacks.
This book is will help anyone who suffers debilitating migraine attacks, and is the perfect size to be kept in a handbag, briefcase or pocket for easy and frequent reference.

The Probiotics Revolution by Dr Gary Huffnagle
Crohn’s disease is only one of the many conditions that Dr Gary Huffnagle believes could be significantly improved by probiotics.
In a very readable format, this fascinating book describes the hugely complex relationship that we have with the millions of microbes with whom we live and how the immune system can get confused, becoming self-destructive as in autoimmune conditions such as Crohn's, diabetes or coeliac disease.

Natural Alternatives to Anti-Biotics by Dr John McKenna
A history of anti-biotics (the natural ones such as honey, garlic or vinegar
in use since pre-history, and the manufactured ones in use since the 1940s)
is followed by an explanation of how bacteria work and by details of how antibiotics
have been abused in over the last 40 years. Prescribing anti-biotics for viral
conditions (colds, flu, glandular fever, herpes, gastroenteritis etc) is only
the most obvious.
Dr McKenna then goes on to examine the conditions for which antibiotics are
so often prescribed and to look at the effective herbal, homeopathic and nutritional
alternatives. A very useful book for the family library, especially if there
are children in the house.

Ultimate Health by Dr John Briffa
Ultimate Health encapsulates much of conventional doctor turned naturopath,
John Briffas experience in natural medicine, especially the conviction that
treating the body will be of little long term use unless the patient is prepared
also to treat their soul.
The first section of the book deals with the body, looking at what John Briffa
sees as six underlying factors which are common to so many conditions: breathing,
water consumption, detoxification, blood sugar balance and adrenal gland health,
thyroid function and exercise. The importance of each to the overall operation
of the body is explained, with charts for self assessment, suggestions as to
how function could be improved and a useful summary at the end of each chapter.
The second part takes the same approach to the emotional or spiritual
aspects of the individual: learning to be in harmony with and respect
oneself; trusting
one’s intuition; the concept that life only reflects back to us what
we project into it; seeing the positive in everything; loving others through
loving oneself. The third section is a quite comprehensive A-Z of natural health
approaches to 150 common ailments.
But useful though this latter section is, it the first and second parts
of the book which are particularly thought provoking. Quite easy going
but informative,
illustrated both with case histories and incidents in his own life, the book
is well worth reading even if you do not have a specific problem. Pay attention
to what he says and you may not get one!
