Nutrition and Mental Health: a handbook by Martina Watts

This book brings together the papers presented at a series of recent conferences and includes a fascinating range of speakers and topics.

They include, amongst others, Dr Abram Hoffer who has been successfully treating schizophrenia with vitamin B3 (niacin) for more than 50 years; Dr Natasha Campbell McBride a leading expert on children with gut disorders and mental health problems; Dr Alex Richardson a pioneer of the use of omega 3 fatty acids to treat ADHD and dyslexia and Linda Trott who son Duncan, aged 17, was held in an adult psychiatric ward, diagnosed with schizophrenia and heavily medicated for several years before his problems were identified as food sensitivities and the residue of a severe infant infection. The papers have been edited and are introduced by nutritionist Martina Watts who also organised the conferences.

A fascinating read for anyone interested in the connection between mental health and nutrition; essential and illuminating reading for those working in the mental health sector.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: a natural way to treat ME by Professor Basant K. Puri

A strong body of medical opinion now sees essential fatty acids (in particular the highly unsaturated fatty acids - HUFAs) not only as crucial for proper brain function but implicated in a wide range of baffling conditions such as chronic fatigue and ME.

In this new book, Dr Basant Puri, an acknowledged expert in the field, looks specifically at Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, describing the research which indicates that CF sufferers have statistically significantly lower levels of key HUFAs (in particular GLA, AA and EPA).

He goes on to show how our ability to synthesise these HUFAs from the ‘parent’ essential fatty acids, Omega 3 & Omega 6, can be dramatically impaired by a virus which attacks the enzyme (delta6-desaturase) which is crucial to this synthesis. This theory fits well with the viral origin theory for CF/ME. Dr Puri maintains that with depleted levels of HUFAs the immune system is unable to combat the original virus and its subsequent spin offs, thus creating the downward spiral so often seen in CF/ME. His suggestion is that by feeding the patient those HUFAs in a pure form (he suggests virgin evening primrose oil and pure EPA) one by-passes the damaged delta-6-saturase enzyme. The HUFAs provide the body with the ‘fuel’ that it needs to rebuild its own defences and, in due course, repel and eject both the original virus and any subsequent spin off viral or bacterial infections. A compelling argument.

The Nutritional Health Bible by Linda Lazarides

Linda Lazarides was the very pro-active founder of the Society for the Promotion of Nutritional Therapy. Two thirds of her book is made up of an encyclopedia of nutrients. For each she gives its function, good food sources, deficiency symptoms and ways of preventing deficiency, suggested supplementation and what she calls cautions. The information is clear and copious although the style and lay out is decidedly text booky.

The remains of the book is taken up with an extremely useful collection of research references on he nutritional causes of illness, and some general healthy living advice.

The Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford

A substantial book from the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition. It is aimed at the general reader and zips along with a generous smattering of bullet points, catchy headlines, diagrams and personal questionnaires - 'your Vitamin B5 score' kind of thing.

Despite its bulk the book is very readable and filled with an immense quantity of useful nutritional information for both lay and professional readers. It contains sections of nutritional healing, research material and supplements.
