New Products

Lactofree yogurts

Lactofree milks will be old favourites with many lactose-intolerant readers – many of whom will remember them from the days when they were called Lactolite and only came in little UHT packets. The development, by Arla Foods, of a fresh Lactofree milk (hard to tell from ‘ordinary’ cow’s milk) was very welcome and now it looks as though we can look forward to a whole range of Lactofree products...
The first up are their new yogurts – a large (500g) pot of plain and individual pots of strawberry and raspberry. The plain yogurt includes nothing except milk, starter culture and lactase enzyme so it not too sweet. It is very smooth but quite runny rather than set so excellent on cereal or fruit. It also seems to cook well – we used it for the chocolate sauce in the pear recipe in this month's issue.

The fruit yogurts do taste really fruity (7% fruit plus concentrated fruit juice in each) plus elder- berry concentrate. A little cornflour to thicken but no added sugar.
Cost: £1.29 for the plain, £1.59 for 4x125g pots of
fruit from all major supermarkets.

Provamel’s new Omega 3 soya ‘milk'

Provamel’s new Omega 3 soya ‘milk’ uses linseeds to provide you with 30% of your RDA or Omega 3 in just one 200ml glass – and it tastes nice!
As with all Provamel products, it is fully organic and, apart from the linseeds, only includes tapioca syrup and sea salt.
It cost £1.49 per litre from all good health food stores.

Lovemore Savouries
Lovemore FreeFrom are continuing to launch new
baked goodies. After their Christmas range, it is savoury
palmiers, straws and biscuits.
The straws and palmiers are quite a triumph as, being dairy free as well as gluten and wheat free, they have to create a nice, more-cocktails-please flavour without the use of ‘real’ cheese! This they do pretty well, especially after 10 minutes in a hot oven after which they are tanned and crispy and very more-ish.
The savoury biscuits cost £1.89 per 175g pack, the straws and palmiers £2.39 for a 150g pack from some Waitrose stores and Goodness Direct – www.goodnessdirect.co.uk.

Freebake Mixes
Freebake is a division of one of the major bakery companies that has developed a range of gluten-free mixes for both the catering trade and for the consumer.
Their mixes (bread, cake and pizza base) are all preservative free and are available in bulk packs (2.4kg or the really mega 19.2 kg caterers’ pack) either on prescription through a pharmacy or by mail order from their website – www.freebake.co.uk – or on the phone – 0845 603 9230. The 2.4kg pack costs £12.15 and makes you six 700g loaves – but of course you do have to pay for postage unless you can get it on prescription.
So far we have only tried the bread mix –
potato, corn, rice and buckwheat flour, sugar, salt, guar gum, sunflower oil and anticaking agent – plus added yeast, which comes in the pack.
The bread was easy to make up by hand or in a bread maker. It comes out slightly startlingly white, but the texture is excellent – soft but not ‘squishy’ with a nice crisp crust. Flavour also good – interesting and tasty even without any butter or spread!
We look forward to tasting the other mixes.

Gluten-free from Finland
Moilas enthusiasts (you remember that excellent range of gluten free pizzas, pastas and such like from Finland which were around for a year or so and then disappeared?) will be glad to know that at least some of their products are now available from Gluten Free from Finland, a site run by chef Minna Moller-Thompson who is a coeliac. Unable to source suitable ingredients for her own diet, she set up a business selling gluten-free goods from Finland, as well as providing homemade gluten-free foods to local delis and individuals by special order.
She too has a bread mix along with oats, cereals, sweets – and Moilas pastas.
To check out exactly what is on offer, check her site at www.glutenfreefromfinland.com
