A recent article in the National Geographic News lists, alarmingly, the substances that have recently been found in coastal waters, river water and drinking water:
In the Puget Sound off north west America – cinnamon, sage, thyme, chocolate and, strongly, vanilla... the equivalent, they report, of 10 four ounce bottles of vanilla essence in an Olympic size swimming pool.
At a Spanish water treatment plant and in the River Po in Italy - cocaine.
The River Po is also known to carry more than 20 kilos of pharmaceuticals each day - including hormone mimicking oestrogens.
