I have just been reading the reports about the new study which says that genes are to blame for ADHD - and all the pundits who are not agreeing.... But in all huffing a puffing about good and bad parenting, too many drugs, educations interventions etc etc - not one single person has mentioned diet!
I am sure there was some research not that long ago proving that even non hyperactive children were badly affected by additives and colourings - let alone kids who are already hyperactive. Changing your child's diet to cut out additives and colours and junk food is really not that hard - and costs less than living on junk food too. Surely it is worth a try.... If it doesn't work you can always go back to the interventions and the drugs - but what if it does?.... |

I'd say two things here. First, that genes are *part* of the picture, according to the research, and second yes, of course eating more healthily is always worth a try - but I disagree that, for some people, it's 'really not that hard'. This is a huge topic, but I do think we've lost culinary skills in this country and many of us are desperately time-strapped. Some people struggle to put home-cooked, nutritious food on the table for their kids, and it's not always their fault. I know we have lots of initiatives, magazines, TV programmes about healthy eating - but I wonder sometimes whether these messages are getting through to the people who need to hear them...
