Hi all, I have read that this product is supposed to break down the gluten in your digestive system before it reaches your lower intestine. I'm not exactly sure how it works and so I was dubious at first. But a couple of weeks ago a friend fed me 3 pieces of bread that she claimed were gluten free, but were in fact only wheat free. My knickers were properly in a twist. I was fearing a weekend on the toilet with my seatbelt strapped on... but I had popped one of these pills before the meal as a precaution and unbelievably I only got the mildest of symptons. Some bloating and a little stomach ache, but nothing compared to the storm I was expecting.
There are mixed reviews out there but I think that it's worth a go if you're very sensitive. It might mean that you can get away with trace gluten in your food when you eat out. I would not recommend taking a pill and then eating gluten on purpose. Anyone else had any success with it? |

Hi Fredidevas -
It would be amazing if there were some sort of pill one could pop to to save one from the fallout from accidentally eaten gluten, even if it did not allow one to go the whole way. I think that the product you are talking about is made by Biocare (I know that they make lots of nutritional/digestive enzyme type products - I think they also so one for people with lactose intolerance) and is designed to 'help you digest gluten' so not, presumably, to do the whole job. I did Google it and found a review which was semi-positive - like you, it did not stop the guy getting a reaction but he felt that it was probably a milder reaction than if he hadn't taken it. Someone told me about some Italian conference where they were reporting successful trials of drugs which really would block the reaction... Roll on the day! Meanwhile, I'll give the Glutenzyme a go. Be good to hear if anyone else has tried it. |

Hi - in my experience digestive enzyme products like this will help most people. It won't solve the problem of an allergy, but it can break down more of it so less is available to affect you. If this type of product helps you, it is likley that the heart of your intolerance (note - NOT coeliac disease), is a lack of ability to digest gluten or indeed other foods properly. In which case, see someone for how to test your digestion and correct it as there are many stomach acid and digestive enzyme products out there. I find a lack of stomach acid is really endemic in the population at the moment - and if you think about it, no stomach acid leads to no digestion and partially digested proteins getting to the liver or gut. Add in a leaky gut or liver filtration issue - and hey presto, an allergic reaction. It really is key. Hope that helps.
