Default The Specific Carbohydrate Diet

The SCD has been found to be of great benefit by many people with Crohn's disease. It is based on research which confirms that harmful microorganisms in the gut can damage the gastrointestinal tract. The research attests that these gut pathogens survive because they feed and thrive on carbohydrates that are difficult to digest. The SCD seeks to eliminates the pathogens' favorite carbohydrates, so starving them out and relieving symptoms.

A new, small study has shown how diet can impact gut microbes in Crohn’s patients.

The study compared the effects on the gut microbiota of Crohn's patients of two controlled diets - the Low Residue Diet (LRD) and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) - and found that dietary change in these patients resulted in dramatic changes in the microbiome of the large intestine.

Those on the LRD diet experienced a decrease in microbiome diversity, with 11 bacteria belonging to 3 families disappearing, whilst those on the SCD saw an increase in diversity to include 376 bacteria belonging to 32 different classes.

The "SCD Didn't Work for Me" Survey

Reid Kimball, who is making a documentary film about alternative treatments for IBD, wants to know why the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) doesn't work for some people.

He's prepared 10 questions, in the hope that the aggregated responses might enable the SCD community to help those who are struggling with this diet.

If this diet DIDN'T work for you, you can take the survey here: http://crohnsend.com/2011/11/survey-...t-work-for-me/

Johanna, a courageous, funny young woman, is chronicling her journey back to health from Crohn's disease.

After making the decision to stop hard medication to manage her disease during the worst flare of her life, she refused all hard drugs and went the route of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. She wears her heart on her sleeve and tells it like it is.
