Just saw this news report today from New Scientist..
New Scientist 17.4.10 "HEALTH WARNING OVER ADDITIVE" The safety of antimicrobial soaps & toothpastes is under review following concerns that they could interfere with hormones in the body. Last week the US Food & Drug Admin (FDA) said it will re-evaluate the safety of triclosan, added to soaps & toothpastes to prevent bacteria. It is not yet recommending that consumers avoid such products. The FDA will look at evidence that triclosan might affect the development of the nervous system in which thyroid hormones play a key role. One recent lab study showed triclosan may lower thyroid hormones. The Natural Resources Defense Council, the US environmental advocacy group said this is 'long overdue.' One of the best toothpastes to use is the Aloe Dent range. Try that instead. |

Hi Micki -
That's a bit scary..... I have been using the Green People's fennel toothpaste for years - tastes brilliant, if you like aniseed - and I am hoping is free of anything nasty...... |

And the FDA have still not made a decision on this issue, despite new evidence indicating that triclosan is an endocrine disrupter that disturbs thyroid hormones in laboratory frogs and rats, and sex hormones in other lab animals.
