I was informed today that some child that are allergic to cow's milk can be hyperactive.
well when i first put my son on cows milk he used to being sick, and then he would be voilently sick if he had anything that was full fat i.e milk, cheese, yogurt and shop bought dips. i put him onsemi skimmed milk and he isn't sick anymore, and don't let him have to many dips or full fat yogurts only half fat , he's 5 now and drink cups of semi- skimmed milk and is fine. But how ever he has always been very hyperactive and at times this can lead to naughtiness. so i was wondering if this could be linked? |

Hi Lunalily -
I have often heard of a connection between cow's milk products and hyperactivity for some kids although not for all - but the fact that your son used to be sick with full fat cow's milk might suggest that he did have a problem with cow's milk. Have you ever tried goat's milk or soya milk products? They don't taste that different from cow's milk and they have lots of fruit yogurts and some really nice cream cheeses - especially a brand called Tofutti. Why not try him on those for a few weeks and see if it makes any difference? Have you ever heard of the Hyperactive Childrens' Support Group? They are really helpful about diet and suggest that you try to cut out all additives. There is an article about them on the Foods Matter site - I have just found it at http://www.foodsmatter.com/asd_autis...hd_advice.html or you could just look at their website - http://www.hacsg.org.uk/ Good luck! |

Hi - if you have a problem with cow's milk, normally in my experience it would show with any type of cow's milk, no matter what the fat type. It may be that just because he isn't having the most concentrated form of the milk, he doesn't have such a noticeable reaction (the vomiting), but it would still show in some form, and this might be the hyperactivity. He might have been hyperactive and vomiting before, but as the vomiting is more shocking and noticeable, you didn't notice the behaviour as much.
I would also be inclined to think about either the link between essential fats and behaviour - is he having a problem with digesting or metabolising fats, maybe, or allergic to fats? Or we know that toxins concentrate in fat - is it an allergy to something in the fat which there is less of in semi-skimmed? Either way, I would agree to try off all cow's milk (and goat's/sheep's) for a while and try soya as an alternative and see how he goes. Good luck. |
