Molkosan – gluten-free prebiotic

Although probiotics are now generally recognised as an important factor in maintaining healthy gut flora and therefore a healthy bowel, and are widely marketed both as functional foods and as supplements, they remain very difficult to deliver to where they are needed – the large intestine and the colon. The hostile environment (stomach acids etc) through which they have to travel to get there destroys very significant numbers of them, if not all of them, before they arrive at their destination.
How much better therefore, to encourage their the growth and wellbeing in the colon and large intestine by feeding them health giving foods which will allow them to flourish in situ. Hence the need for prebiotics such as Molkosan which will not be absorbed by the body but which will provide the right environment in the gut for the bacteria to thrive thus encouraging a healthy population without the need for extra supplementation.
The Molkosan prebiotic is based on the whey concentrate originally developed in the 1950s by Swiss naturopath and health pioneer, Alfred Vogel from the milk of cows grazing the herb-rich Alpine uplands. The modern version includes not only the whey concentrate but maize starch, lactic acid, fructose, orange flavour and green tea extract – so it is gluten free but not lactose/dairy free.
It is taken in a glass of cold water and is pleasant enough – slightly sweet, sightly orangey – to drink. Our reports suggest that it is a very 'soothing' drink for a slightly dodgy stomach and, although beneficial effects are likely to be felt in the long term rather than the short, it 'felt as thought it was doing one good'.....
