The prevalence of coeliac disease in the US

Researchers in the US have estimated the number of people suffering from coeliac disease by taking a nationally representative sample: the people who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2010. The survey included 7798 people aged 6 years and over, from all of whom serum samples were collected for immunoglobulin A (IgA) tissue transglutaminase antibodies. Information about coeliac diagnosis was taken by interview.

Coeliac disease was found in 35 of the 7798, of whom 29 were unaware of having the disease. Twenty of these were women, all were non-Hispanic whites, and median age was 45 years. Fifty-five of the 7798 were following a gluten-free diet.

From this, the researchers estimate that the prevalence of coeliac disease in the US is 0.71% (1 in 141), and 1.01% among non-Hispanic whites. Most of the people on a gluten-free diet did not have coeliac disease.
