The effect of mobile phone use on men attending an infertility clinic

A study carried out to determine the effect of mobile phone use on semen quality focussed on 361 men undergoing evaluation at a fertility clinic. The men were divided into four groups: group A – no phone use; group B – less than 2 hours a day; group C – between 2 and 4 hours day; and group D – over 4 hours phone use per day.

Their sperm was measured and compared for volume, liquefaction time, pH, viscosity, sperm count, motility, viability and morphology. The results showed that the use of cell phones decrease the semen quality in men by decreasing the sperm count, motility, viability and morphology. How much of a decrease there was depended on the length of time the men used their mobile phones per day.
